Quality assurance in the 21st century 19 Apr 2018

In the modern radiology department time and resources are frequently stretched and establishing a robust quality assurance (QA) programme can seem like a daunting task. This talk covers the motivation behind implementing such QA programmes including the legislative and safety requirements. The necessary components for an effective QA programme are highlighted and practical approaches for prioritising the workload, developing standardised testing methods and training staff are suggested.

Experience of putting a QA programme into everyday practice is included as well as troubleshooting strategies to help deal with potential difficulties. Methods of data management and analysis are reviewed including the advantages and disadvantages of various techniques.

The roles and responsibilities of each member of the QA team are also examined with particular emphasis on the importance of communication and co-operation between staff groups. Finally, the importance and challenges of preparing for accreditation with the Imaging Services Accreditation Scheme (ISAS) is discussed.
