Defining Significant events 09 May 2018

February 2018 saw the new IRMER regulations come into force. Changes in the regulations around statutory
notifications charged the enforcement authority in England with defining significant events. The CQC took the
opportunity to revise the existing notification criteria and thresholds for reporting of significant,
accidental and unintended exposures.

Rachael Ward

Rachael Ward Inspection Manager IRMER, Care Quality Commission Ms Rachael Ward is the Inspection Manager for the IRMER Enforcement Team at the Care Quality Commission. She trained as a Diagnostic Radiographer at The Royal London Hospital in 1993. She went on to work in various NHS trusts and specialised after a number of years in cardiac imaging. In 2006 she was appointed as Project Manager for the 2006 PACS implementation in Plymouth and in 2009 took up a post as an Advanced Practitioner in Radiation Protection in the medical physics team. She has been working as a Clinical Specialist Inspector at the CQC since July 2013 before taking on the lead role in 2018. Her work involves IRMER inspection programmes, notifications of exposures ‘significant, accidental or unintended’, advice and support of the work of the CQC under the Health and Social Care Act and specialist advice to acute trusts and the independent sector. Ms Ward also works closely with the SCoR, PHE and other radiation professional bodies.
