and how this affects the role of the MPE, registration of MPEs and CREs and the purpose of the quality
assurance process for the review process.

It also presents the revised guidance produced by the HRA Radiation Guardians Group, the use of the Generic
Radiation Risk Statements and completion of the Research Exposure form by Registered MPEs and CREs.

Educational aims:
• To provide an insight into the HRA managed study process.
• To gain knowledge on self-managed studies.

Giles Morrison

Head of Radiology Physics, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Mr Giles Morrison has been Head of Radiology Physics for 13 years. As a member of the IPEM Diagnostic Radiology SIG (2002-05), he approached COREC, asking whether they were aware that IRMER 2000 placed requirements on the approval of research studies involving. This rapidly led to the inception of Part B Section 3 of the IRAS application form. COREC set up an Ad Hoc Working Group on radiation protection, which transitioned to NRES and produced the 2008 Guidance ‘Approval for research involving ionising radiation’. More recently, Mr Morrison became a Health Research Authority ‘Radiation Guardian’ working with a team of MPEs around the country to streamline the approval process for research involving ionising radiation. Throughout this period he has kept the DRSIG appraised of developments and will present the latest updates on the HRA approvals process and related guidance. He is the HRA 4-Nations Radiation Assurance Working Party representative for England
