Proton and particle radiotherapy 17 Jul 2015

Professor Stuart Green (physicist) presents the technology for proton beam radiotherapy, including accelerators and general approaches to beam delivery. Some uncertainties are described including proton range and RBE (Relative Biological Effectiveness), and the development of a new dosimetry code of practice for scanned beam treatments to support the UK centres is introduced. Hazel Pennington provides the radiographer’s perspective and focus on the progress of PBT (Proton Beam Therapy) project to develop a national service in the UK; covering equipment, build, workforce and training. Dr Adrian Crellin (oncologist) discusses the rationale for who is likely to benefit from radiotherapy treatment with protons, the current overseas programme and the NHS England service commencing in 2018.
