The BIR/DMCI "Hands-On" training series continues with the first event on trauma imaging. The event will provide delegates with “hands-on” experience of reviewing cases with experts in the field. In each session, delegates will be asked to review up to 10 case studies. This will be followed by an interpretation session with the experts, during which there will be dedicated time for delegates to pose questions and to interact with tutors.

The number of places will be limited so that delegates can experience a more personalised, interactive method of teaching. Early booking is therefore strongly advised.

The course will be run using iMacs to provide the best interactive experience for every delegate.

Educational Aims:
  • To understand the role of imaging in the severely injured patient, with particular emphasis on whole body CT
  • When is it safe to scan the severely injured patient? Understand the role of whole body CT not just in the “golden hour” but in the secondary imaging survey following emergent thoracotomy or laparotomy
  • To correctly interpret traumatic aortic injury, active bleeding from complex pelvic fractures, abdominal solid organ injuries and understand the role of interventional radiology in the management of these conditions
  • To correctly interpret neurological and spinal trauma. What needs urgent neurosurgical review? Is the spinal injury stable?
  • To appreciate the role of imaging in penetrating trauma, including the pearls and pitfalls
Delegates will be given the opportunity to review a number of case studies on individual work stations focusing on the polytrauma patient, with a particular emphasis on:
  • Neurospinal trauma
  • Traumatic aortic injury
  • Splenic injury
  • Liver injury
  • Pelvic Fractures

Feedback from previous “Hands-on” training courses:

Excellent course. Large volume of interesting cases all with good learning points.

The idea is perfect - at the moment “hands-on” courses are the only way of learning that I am interested in. Short introductory lectures were necessary and well designed. Provided self-assessment booklets - brilliant!

Tremendous learning experience.
