Accelerated MRI: Hype or hope for increased patient throughput 01 Nov 2022

The NHS England 2020 Report ‘Diagnostics: Recovery and Renewal’ by Professor Sir Mike Richards, emphasised the need to increase diagnostic activity, including the back log of imaging caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. His recommendation was an expansion in equipment in line with the then growth rates as well as the replacement of all equipment over ten years old. The latest MRI system upgrades now feature several advanced acquisition and reconstruction techniques designed to accelerate MR imaging with the potential to increase patient throughput. However, the principles and practice of these techniques are often not well appreciated.

This BIR virtual meeting will discuss the basic theory, applications, advantages, and limitations of accelerated MRI methods from the perspective of the MR physicist, radiographer, and radiologist.

The main MRI vendors will also present brief overviews of their methods offered on their systems.

Educational aims:

  1. To describe the basic principles of parallel imaging, compressed sensing, and deep learning.
  2. To judge how accelerated imaging can contribute to increased diagnostic capacity
  3. To assess the challenges associated with the implementation of accelerated imaging from a physicist, radiographer, and radiologist perspective
  4. To compare the various vendor approaches to accelerated imaging
